US Dollar Yen–USD/JPY

August 31, 2008

USD/JPY is heavy again in early weekly trading in Asia.

Look for formidable support @ 107.25. If that is breached to the downside, it opens a clear road to 104.5-105, in our opinion.

We’re keeping our eyes on it.

HEADLINE :        COULDN’T RESIST CABLE WITH A 1.80 HANDLE OR GBP/JPY WITH A 195 HANDLE

……might live to regret it, though, that’s why we went 0.5XMARGIN, to reduce $$ risk

Cold War II, Wag the Dog?

August 31, 2008

The following post is also posted at a new blog I started – http://ranbling.wordpress.com/

Who Benefits?

That’s the first question one should always ask when trying to find the underlying cause of any conflict, military or otherwise.

If the answer is obvious (the store owner fought off the robber), identifying the motivation, for both parties is usually very easy.

When identifying the beneficiaries is not so easy to figure out, one needs to look deeper and enlarge the pool of participants benefiting from the conflict.

Who Benefits?………………. may become a clearer and more obvious answer, the deeper you look.

Put the following search terms into a Google Web Search (russia, cold, war, 2008) and you get 4.3MILLION hits………….try it. Search the same in News and you get over 7,000 hits for the month of August 2008.

The Western Media has emphasized on “Russian Aggression” angle.

Many of the news stories have turned more grim as time passes, lets take a look a sample timeline of media coverage of the entire situation as it has grown.

Georgia begins war to retake South Ossetia

Georgian forces have launched a massive military offensive to take control of its breakaway republic of South Ossetia. Heavy artillery is bombarding the capital Tskhinvali while fighter planes have attacked at least one village. ……..

Personal Note:

I also saw a few reports on television , probably one of the BBC channels we get here in the States, indicating that indeed Georgia, not Russia, initiated the latest escalation in the regional conflict.

Medvedev endorses Georgia break-up

By Charles Clover in Moscow, Isabel Gorst in Tbilisi and Stefan Wagstyl in London Published: August 26 2008 12:28 | Last updated: August 26 2008 21:03

Russian president Dmitry Medvedev on Tuesday recognised the independence of South Ossetia and Abkhazia,………..[the] decision could deepen the divide between Russia and the west and undermine efforts to establish political stability in the Caucasus region, the route of important oil and gas pipelines.

West tells Russia to keep out of Ukraine

Britain led a chorus of support for Ukraine on Wednesday as western fears rose of possible Russian attempts to build on its victory in Georgia by threatening neighbouring states.

Speaking during a visit to Kiev, David Miliband, the UK foreign secretary, called on the European Union and Nato to prepare for “hard-headed engagement” with Moscow following its military action in Georgia.

“Russia was testing an intercontinental ballistic missile from its recently modernised Topol system, …………..”

I added the under line by the way.

Ok, well pretty depressing isn’t it………

Now do a Google News Search for the following words (georgia invades ossetia), you get 411,000 hits.

Now do a Google News Searchfor the same phrase……………0 hits, “Georgia Invaded Ossettia” gets 3 hits…….the Western Media doesn’t like this angle of the story…….I wonder why?

If you took a few minutes too ead a few of the Web Search results you would have come accross this Chicago tribune article written on August 8, 2008

Georgia invades breakaway South Ossetia province; Russia sends in tanks

Georgian troops launched a massive assault on the breakaway province of South Ossetia on Friday, taking control of much of the region and bringing Georgia’s U.S.-allied government closer to the brink of full-scale conflict with Russia.

This is one of a few I foind from a U.S. media outlet reporting on this in early august…..why such little coverage during the first 48 hours of the ecscalation? Look deeper, you’ll find that there is at least a possibility that Georgia started it this time. Georgia was the first to start escalation of the conflict by sending more troops into South Ossetia and launching rocket and artilery attacks on separatists South Ossetia foreces first, before Russia sent any additional troops to reinforce their ”peacekeepers” that have been there since the early 1990s, by the way.

The  heavily left leaning Stalon.com……Uh…Uh!…….Oh!……..I mean Salon.com ………. has an interesting article on the whole mess, including their assertions of our involvement in a failed Venezuela coup attempt and our general meddling around the globe…….a little advice, you’ll have to lean your head to the right to compendsate when readingthe “sTalon.com” article.

But still, no one is talking about who are the beneficiaries of this conflict are. How are they benefiting in both a global political and economic sense.

We should all give that a ponder, with an open mind……… I know I will.

While our RSI studeis are signaing a potential bottom in a few of the GBP pairs, TF.com has a very interesting srticle reagrding the British currencythis article, suggesta the fall may still have room………

“The pound has suffered its worst monthly fall against the dollar since the UK left the European Exchange Rate Mechanism in 1992. Sterling has dropped 8.2 per cent in August, not far off its 8.6 per cent tumble of October 1992…………..”
